History of Boulogne

Boulogne is a much prettier and enjoyable town to visit than Calais. Just 20 minutes down the A16 from Calais, you may find it a better bet if you prefer shopping somewhere quieter and with a better French ambience.

Boulogne is France's premier fishing port. A pleasant change from the dull modernity of Calais the disadvantage of no ferry sailings is more than outweighed by the better "French ambience" and architectural beauty of it's old town. The supermarkets at St. Martin are better than those on offer in Calais too. Stroll down the pedestrianised rue de Lille in the Old Town to get feel of old Boulogne. Boulogne is twinned with Folkestone.

It is usually best to buy at a supermarket. Fuel on the autoroute usually cost about 15% more.

Shopping Centres

In the main part of Boulogne most of the shops are in the pedestrianised rue Thiers which is walkable from the port.

There are two main shopping zones in Boulogne.

The easiest to get to is Centre E. Leclerc, ZI de la Liane. 62230. Outreau. There is not much here but it is easy to get to from the ferry port, and the A16 autoroute is close by.

Further out of town but bigger and with a better range of shops is the Centre Commercial Auchan, RN42, Saint Martin Boulogne. The following stores are here; Kiabi, Boulanger, Intersport, Espace Chantemur, Leroy Merlin, Saint Maclou, Top Office, Norauto, Conforma, Hygena.
