Dieppe Tourism - Museums and Places to visit

Church of Saint Jacques - Construction began around 1168. It burned down in 1195 but was rebuilt by the 13th century. Enlarged towards the end of the 14th century, it was embellished with delicate Renaissance carvings. English Pilgrims heading for Santiago de Compostela stop here first.

Church of Saint Rémy - existing since the 11th century, a second church on a new site was started in 1522. Look for the 17th century organ, and a set of 18th century stained glass windows.

Dieppe Museum, rue de Chastes. This flint and sandstone castle dominates the town. In 1443 Charles Desmarets built four towers, joined by curtain walls. The perimeter was enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries. Serving as a prison during the Revolution, it became a barracks in the 18th century Now a museum, it contains a remarkable collection of carved ivories, as well as impressionist paintings. Many street names commemorate Operation Jubilee, carried out on 19th August 1942. A military disaster, some 1,000 of the 6,000 soldiers died. Another 2,000 were captured.

Cheese Tours - Pick up a leaflet from the Tourist Office (Au Pays de Fromage) and foolow the cheese trails around Neufchâtel-en-Bray, less than an hour from Dieppe.
