Dunkirk is the most northern French ferry port, and is only six miles from the Belgium border. The third largest harbour in France, and mostly industrial, producing a substantial portion of France's oil and steel products.

Some useful information on restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and shops in Dunkirk, which we have collated from various sources for ferry travellers to Dunkirk.

The port has been in existence since the 8th Century. The adventures of the great Dunkerquis corsair, Jean Bart is celebrated by his statue (place Jean Bart, Centre). The scene of Operation Dynamo, the mass evacuation of British and Allied troops in May and June 1944, Dunkirk was largely destroyed in the second World War. Interestingly it was the last city to be liberated on May 10th, 1945. Dunkirk is the third port of France.

If you are planning to stop off at a hotel as soon as you arrive at the port, the nearest budget hotels are Campanile, Premiere Class and Kyriad. There is a supermarket called Dia opposite with an adequate range of products. Importantly they are open on Sunday until 1.00pm. The cheapest fuel is available at Auchan Hypermarket (easy for LPG as well). After 8.30pm you can use the automated pumps which take U.K. credit and debit cards.

To get to Centre Auchan, the nearest large hypermerket, turn left at the first roundabout direction Dunkirk Centre for about 4km. The A16 autoroute is close by Auchan Hypermarket – if you are returning and want to fill up and stock up before boarding, the exit to take is 25A.
