Anyone driving to the Alps will find our Ski autoroute Hotels page useful. We found it almost impossible to get a list of budget hotels with links when researching for this page. However after much work (and driving around) we have a page full of useful links. We strongly advise you to plan your route and book a hotel before you go.
The Ski season generally begins with the Mondial du Snow board and Ski at Les Deux Alpes during the last week of October each year (report on the Mondial 2006).
Rail Europe / Eurostar - the weekly direct train service to Aimé la Plagne, Bourg-St-Maurice and Moutiers runs from December 22nd 2007 to April 13th 2008 this season. The daytime services leaves London at 10.00 on Saturdays and arrives in Bourg-St-Maurice at 6.20pm. The overnight service begins on Friday 28th December 2007 (finishing 21st March 2008), leaving London at 8.31pm and arriving at 6.27am. The snow train does not go to Grenoble (Oisans ski resorts), but the journey time is shorter (TGV from Paris).
Foreign Office warning - too few skiers have proper insurance. They note that most ski resorts only have private health facilities which are NOT covered by the European Health Insurance Card (old E111).

Saving money on a ski holiday 1 - Go at a quiet time - dates. 2 - Don't stay in the resort - many villages lower down have direct links to the ski areas. 3 - Drive - the cross channel companies often have good deals with ski insurance. A slightly longer route to the Alpes is via Lille in France / Belgium / Luxembourg and then down through Germany, but there are no tolls on this route. Remember however that Switzerland has a charge for using their autoroutes. 4 - Wait - if you can wait until a few weeks before you plan to go, many holidays will be discounted. 5 - Avoid the big resorts - invest in a good ski guide to find out if the little gem you think you have found is just that. 6 - Hire skis and Skiwear at home (www.skiset.com - Skiset - pre book ski hire, 210 shops, Snigger - Tel: 01491 628 300), or shop at stores such as Marks and Spencer or in France, www.decathlon.fr and www.go-sport.com. 7 - Self Cater - if you are driving, bring your own food (dried goods especially). Stock up on wine and fresh food at a hypermarket on the way and you will be quids in. 8 - Avoid weekends - this is possible, especially out of season and means cheaper flights and better availability of cars for hire for example. 9 - Shop around - common sense but do you? 10 - Coach - not as bad as it sounds as they generally travel overnight.
