Tesco Vins Plus is now closed. A sad end to a prosperous period, which has ended, not because the store was losing money, but because they were not making as much as before. British companies tradionally like to make a lot more profit than European ones. The last weeks were marked by frequent strikes.

July 2010 - Tesco will close at the end of July. However the staff are frequently on strike and they are not bringing in any more stock. The unions are angry as they claim that; the rent was substantially reduced in January, takings are up 10% this year, more people are returning with the improving exchange rate and the closure does not make economic sense. Tesco seems keen to close the store though, as staff have had their reduncy offer upped from three months to ten. The staff want the store to stay open, but negotiations are, according to La Voix du Nord (a local newspaper), not going well.

May 2010 - Bad news. Tesco Vins Plus in Calais has announced it will close. No closure date has been announced yet, although it is rumoured to be around the end of July. www.lavoixeco.com (English translation)

Tesco's store in Cité Europe is usually packed with keen British shoppers. With a good range of wines similar to those found at home, it also has a wide range of beers and spirits. Conveniently you can shop and pay for your goods, and then leave them in the shop, for picking up later when you have your car and after you have finished the rest of your shopping.

Tesco Vins Plus closed 31st July 2010

There are 71 staff at the store which opened 15 years ago, largely to cater for a UK clientele in search of cheap alcohol. However, the store's appeal as a convenient, competitively-priced outlet for alcohol has diminished as a result of the weak pound against the euro and the recession while UK supermarkets have also dropped their prices. Unions at Tesco Vins Plus contest the management's view that the store is no longer a going concern and claim that a report from an independent auditor appointed by the works council concludes that there is no economic justification to close the store.
